This loop around the volcanic giants of the Central North Island takes you across the high central plateau with its uninterrupted views of Mounts Ngauruhoe, Tongariro and Ruapehu amd on through the wilderness forests bisected by the mighty Whanganui River.
Heading south from Taupō, the eastern shores of Lake Taupō offer many opportunities to swim or picnic. Head west at Turangi and follow State Highway 47 to National Park Village. Travel south to Ohakune on State Highway 49 and on to Waiouru. From there head north back to Turangi, completing the loop. With the ever-present backdrop of the mountains of the dual world heritage Tongariro National Park.
