Depart Auckland and follow the Thermal Explorer Highway. As you depart Auckland city you will notice the rolling green hills and pastureland that are synonymous with the Hamilton & Waikato region. Enjoy the morning in Hamilton City before making your way further along the Thermal Explorer Highway to Rotorua. En-route you may wish to divert and visit Hobbiton Movie Set – where they filmed the Shire from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and The Hobbit. You have most of the day in Rotorua today to enjoy the wide range of activities on offer from a lake cruise, immersing yourself in Maori Culture, visiting the geothermal areas and spas to adventure tourism – Rotorua has so much to choose from. In the afternoon make your way to the lakeside town of Taupo. Lake Taupo is New Zealand’s largest lake and dominates the views from this picturesque region. You have the day in Taupo today, visit the spectacular Huka Falls or partake in one of the many adventure activities on offer or take a full day trip to the Tongariro National Park – which has dual World Heritage Status. From here you can either return to Auckland which is a 4 hour drive or continue on the Thermal Explorer Highway to the Hawke’s Bay region.
